Careers X Class (11th/12th grade)
Internships here we come! Have you discovered your passion or calling and developed a plan to realize your dream job? This is your chance to try things out and see if you like the job of your dreams. Our focus this year will be on contacting prospective businesses and community organizations with the goal of arranging internships in our area of interest. In the process we will also be identifying and honing the skills that national and local employers have identified as vital to success in any type of job. A description of the work skills and competencies students will be learning about will be detailed on Ms. Hamilton's Careers X web page and include:
Students will work to understand and apply these important skills as well as assess their individual strengths and weaknesses in these areas.
Special monthly focuses on specific career areas will be a part of the 11/12 grade Careers program and will include guest speakers and field trips to career fairs and other career related enrichment outside of the school.
As an example of this, we have in past years spent time learning about Mental Health and careers in the mental health field. Students learn about the human brain and mental illness. Students research recent studies on the human brain and neurobiology that make it possible to chart the brain's major connections. Students may read profiles of people with mental illness, make a diagnosis in each case, and then study a famous person of their choice who has dealt and coped with a mental illness. Careers in the mental health field will be explored. Through guest speakers from the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI), students will be learning about people who have triumphed over mental illness and how common and treatable certain disorders are in the general population. A Marriage and Family Therapist will visit our classroom speak to the students about his career in mental health.
Work-Ready Skills: Students will be building their Resumes and doing whole class activities related to becoming work-ready students. The goal is to gain awareness of the knowledge and skills required to be good employees that will serve them well in their lives ahead.
CPR/First Aid Certification: All 11th grade students in Ms. Hamilton's 11th/12 grade Advisory class will be certified in the American Heart Association's CPR and First Aid Course this coming November 2013. The Northwest Prep campus will be a safer place due to the basic life saving skills that these students are learning. As first responders all students who complete the course will be able to perform cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), use an automated external defibrillator (AED), help someone who is choking, and give basic first aid. Upon completion of the course the students will receive a Heartsaver AED and First Aid certification card that will last two years. These very important skills not only make our school a safer place for students but the certificate will be a positive addition to the student's professional resume that they will be composing this year.
High School Seniors Focus on the Future: 12th grade students will begin applying to colleges and eventually filling out the FAFSA as well as applying for private scholarships and grants. Admissions information, Educational Opportunity Programs, Student Life, Housing and other college concerns once students leave Northwest Prep are being discussed daily. TAX TIME!! During April those seniors (and juniors) with jobs and W-2 forms will be guided through filling out their Federal and State income tax forms in order to receive refunds!
Global Student Embassy will be returning to Northwest Prep this year (2013-2014) as we work on becoming more aware as global citizens. Please check out Global Student Embassy's website at globalstudentembassy.org to find out more about this wonderful program. The opportunities explored through GSE involvement are helping to focus our students in becoming active, informed citizens empowered to create change in themselves, their communities and their world. Our school is one of only 5 high schools in Sonoma County that are working with GSE.
We hope to host more students from Ecuador and Nicaragua this coming year. Our focus together is on leadership training, community action, challenging our own views of other people of other cultures and engaging in discussion based on project planning and sharing projects. One of our own seniors last year traveledwith Global Student Embassy to Ecuador over her spring break to work on a reforestation project and getting to know more about Ecuadorian culture.
